WHO is "TOKABOUT"

Tokabout What?

Tokabout Afghans was established by Dee Devins in 1997.

Dee has a strong love and passion for the breed and is very well informed. She’s always happy to answer questions, provide a grooming lesson or whatever it takes to ensure your afghan has the quality of life it deserves.

My journey into dogs began as a little girl. We had a mixed breed ( Maltese/poodle )that looked like a mini sheepdog. Betsy was her name. She was my best friend! I groomed her & dressed her in PJ's and wheeled her around in a stroller at 4 yrs old .Dogs have always fascinated me. Later when I lived on my own I got my 1st German Shepherd and showed & bred for around 15 yrs..Always in the back of my mind wanting an Afghan. After all Barbie had an Afghan & I am a Hairdresser, so what better than long beautiful coat ..Hence when I moved to a large country property 8 acres. I got Ch Candyland Tiramisu as my first Afghan in February 2000. I proceeded to put her first Ch title on her & had her finished real quick. Then just went to shows until she got older and began to study where I would go for breeding Tira. I chose Ch Mylakhan Hearttaker Candyland ( Cosmos) as a stud & produced a great litter. I kept a bitch back my Diva and began to set up my breeding program .When Diva was 2 yrs & I had put a CH title on her she was bred to a male Stud I purchased from Australia . Birgit Ferguson who has Tahkira Afghans had a male ..Aust. Ch Tahkira Go To Hell ( Leo ) .He was three yrs old & ready to come having already achieved his Ch title in Australia. .After much negotiations. Leo arrived & stole our hearts . There was a CKC & AKC title put on Leo when he came to live with us in Canada.. Now we are beginning to make our stamp of what I believe is a great Afghan. Leo had much to offer us and I was eager to start... The Tira/Cosmos Combos was repeated & I kept a bitch again Ch Tokabout a Salsa Lady ....She is 2 yrs younger than her sister Diva and will be bred Spring of 2010. Salsa is 3 1/2 yrs old and this will be her first venture into motherhood! Now Back to Diva /Leo on the second litter they produced a wonderful bitch that I kept back Ch Royal Star who I co -own & lives with my friend Savitri Khanna.. We decided Star should have a litter after she finished her Ch. and was health Clearenced. I imported sperm From Summerwind, Rosemary Sutton in California from a wonderful typey Blue male, Am Ch Wynsyr's Do It Again (Dogian) The pedigree's meshed into an amazing litter of 5 girls & 2 boys ..We call them the group of 7 :-) .All Can Ch. at just over a year of showing most of them finishing their titles with Group Placements. Some of them have be started on their AKC titles and the rest will follow in the New Year. Most all of the "Group of 7" are owner handled and that speaks for itself. It's been a busy year in 2009 and the new upcoming litter will tell the tale. I truly believe in working forward & in Breeding and owning healthy dogs. Having been in Shepherds before, and learning, from watching other breeders- the pitfalls of not doing health checks on Both Sire and Dams, all health checks on My dogs are done. I believe in working with my owners and strive to treat people with respect and improve on breeders of the past in regards to mentoring. I Have also helped wherever possible in placing other Breeders Afghans in Ontario. I have worked several times with past Afghan Hound Club of Canada President Bob Garret when needed, as we all have learned that other breeders do not have the same thought process of wanting their dogs back and trying to re-home them in necessary, as I feel we all should strive to do. Not all breeders have a policy where the dogs come back to them if the new owner can not keep the dog . This is a standard policy I implemented from day one, and I stress this with All my new puppy owners. I also Keep track of the puppies & help where ever possible to ensure a happy life for owners & dogs.

I have an annual "reunion" each year where ALL of my friends are welcome- Most all of my pup owners come and bring the dogs- and even the dogs that I have re-homed for the AHCC Rescue come. I open my home and all pups and owners are invited over to spend the day with the dogs- and to play "catch up" with our friendships, and the dogs have a wonderful time playing and eating up the 'treats" that are served! We Often have a "theme" and the dogs LOVE it when we play "dress up"- take a look at some of the wonderful pictures on the "reunion" page.

Showing is for a short time & homes are to be forever when possible.

I've been lucky to meet great people for the most part & learn some of what to do & what not to do every day , Learning & growing as a good breeder strives to do . I Try to plan 2 to 3 generations in advance as to where I am going with my program, to look into the future of where my breeding program will go and where I want it to go. ..Research is the key! ..always seeking to better the breed .That's me trying my best! You can Watch for the future of Tokabout Afghans by checking back at my web site- and click on " NEWS"- we will Try to have exciting News each time you visit!- We are Very excited about the future Breeding's- and the current pups we have now- Tokabout A Dare Devil (DARE) and Tokabout Gone With the Wind-(MIA) are just beginning their show career- Dare winning WD the first weekend out- then winning BOB Puppy and Hound Puppy Group- NOT just once- but THREE TIMES !- and Mia showing in the states at 6 month- 2 days old- and going RWB ( 2pt entry!) we are VERY excited about these "Leo" kids- and where they go and What they do!
